Jack Elsley has won the 2020 Club Championship, holding his nerve and comfortable lead in the wild conditions on final round to win the title by 5 strokes.
Jack started the final round on Sunday with an 8 shot lead from Stephan Scheepers, but with the wind on Sunday morning playing havoc with the ball, and scores, from the earlier starters, that lead wasn’t as comfortable as it could have been.
At the turn, the overall placing in the top group hadn’t changed, with majority of the group sitting about 5 over through the first 9 holes. First Round leader Zac Quirk, the third placed seed, wasn’t able to gain any ground on Jack or Stephan, and the fourth seed and final member of the group Glenn Esden had slipped to 7 over, even though his birdie on the 6th was the best score from any in the lead group on the front 9.
The final nine holes produced the most action of the day, with players managing the windy conditions slightly better. Jack held on to his lead, even though he did record his worst round of the Championships on the final day, scoring 83 after going 76-72-74 in his first three rounds. Zach finished strong with three birdies in the last four holes, finishing the back nine just 1 over par, enough to jump Stephan and claim the Runner-Up award.
In the B and C Grade competition, both overnight leaders also held on to win their respective Divisions.
Jonathan Broadbent, just in the upper echelon of B Grade on a handicap of 13, finished in the Top 10 Gross overall, scoring 84-86-90-86=346 to win by a margin of 7 shots from Runner-Up Dustyn Brown. Jonathan will find a ‘change of pace’ this weekend when he is placed in A Grade after his handicapped has dropped following the Championships.
Shaun Jones wasn’t content to just hold onto his lead in the C Grade Championship, instead he blasted a 91 in the final to establish a 16-stroke lead over Runner-Up Mark Lunn. Shaun was the only C Grader (Handicaps above 23) to score three sub-century rounds in the Championship, and if it wasn’t for him scoring bob-on 100 in the first round, he would have been under triple figures for all rounds. Shaun (now GA 19.3) will also find himself dropping a division, and will play in B Grade for the Monthly Medal next Saturday following his sensational run of scores for the Club Championships.
