Silvana Phillips has won the Women’s Club Championship in spectacular fashion, emerging victorious from a play-off with Jean Brkic. Silvana has seemingly ‘up-rooted’ Jean as the perpetual Club Champion, winning the event for the second year in a row. It was a very close-run Championship – the closest contest in more than a decade – with just a tree root difference between the Clubs best two female golfers.
Silvana hit the top of the leaderboard after the first round, and held that position right up to the fourth round, heading into the final 18 holes with 4 stroke lead. Jean managing to pull back the four shots she started behind Silvana, and actual held the lead for a few holes, before falling behind again, and then rallied once again to be equal with Silvana with just the final hole to play. With both players paring the final hole, it was back out for a 3-hole playoff with the final scores locked at 344.
Although you couldn’t split the difference between Silvana and Jean after 72 holes, it theoretically only took one hole to make a difference in the playoff, after Jean’s first drive saw her snookered up against a tree root on the right of the fairway. Jean effectively lost three shots trying to recover, but was not able to repair the damage done, especially with Silvana’s almost clinical finish.
Playing an almost perfect playoff (played over the 1st, 8th and 9th holes) Silvana went par – par for the first two holes, hitting both greens in regulation, and cleanly putting to maintain a safe lead. Both ladies hit beautiful, and almost identical, drives on the final hole and with that Jean’s hopes of a recovery were mostly dashed. Although Silvana finished with a 6 on the final hole – her approach was just short and then she just missed a bogey putt – it was enough to keep the lead and secure the Championship.
Yvonne Little won the B Grade Championship with a 9-stroke lead over Julie Rayfield.
Valerie McVie won the C Grade Championship from Helen Wilson by a 10-stroke margin.
