A total of 28 teams contested the 2020 Volkswagen Scramble in difficult, blustery conditions at Mount Coolum on Sunday.
With a nett score of 56.375, the winning team consisted of MCGC members Joshua Lee (h’cap 12), Zach Quirk (1), Tim Lee (11) and Peregian’s Andrew Jolly (29).
“Team Lee”, starting from the 16th hole, got off to a good start with birdies on 16 and 18, before settling with just one birdie (on the 4th) in the next six holes. They then hit a purple patch – with birdies on 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12, before closing out with a final birdie on their last hole – the 15th.
Josh Lee said that he had played in a winning team a few years ago, and thought that in the difficult conditions the birdie on the last might just have been enough to sneak them in to the top 2 positions to qualify for the Regional Final.
Second place went to the team of Alan Wong (Sandy Gallop), Warren Seeto (Indooroopilly), Danny Soo and Arthur Kimo (both Gailes) – with a nett score of 57.
The two teams will now contest a Regional Final in the New Year, where they will be accompanied by our Club Professional Stephen Jenkins and Trainee Professional TJ King. Regional Final winners then progress to the National Final – which is generally played at Twin Waters Golf Club. Good luck to both teams!
Please note that the team announced as the winners at the presentation was subsequently disqualified.
