Mount Coolum’s own Darryl Hicks and Col Miller have taken out the 2021 Mount Coolum 3-Day Team Classic in convincing fashion, amassing a three-day total of 28pts from a maximum of 30.
Darryl and Col had the best score on each of the first two days – a very impressive 50pts in the 4BBB Stableford on Day 1, and were only slightly less spectacular on Day 2 with a 65.25 Nett in the 2-Person Ambrose.
After the best possible 2-round score, Darryl and Col needed only to finish in 8th place or better to wrap up their first victory in the event. A shower of rain just before this morning’s tee-time saw a few pairs withdraw, making their task just that little bit easier.
Playing from the first tee with Michael Mraz and Paul Dudman – who were in 2nd place, Darryl and Col saw off the shower, and then recorded a score of 65 pts in the 4-Ball Aggregate Stableford. This was five strokes behind Michael and Paul, but good enough to be the 3rd best score of the day, and take out a convincing 7 point victory.
Mraz and Dudman finished in second place, two points clear of Mick Ludeke and Jan Porter, and Geoff and Donna Turner. With Grant Airey and Juli Hoven finishing 5th, it was all Mount Coolum in the top 5 – in a field where half the players were visitors.
The Mount Coolum Team Classic is as much about friendship and camaraderie off the course as it is about competition on the course. The golf events are complemented by social functions which this year comprised a welcome Cocktail Party after the first round, the Classic Dinner on the evening of the second round, and a “Golfer’s Lunch” presentation this afternoon.
The players were treated to some quality wines provided by tournament sponsors Andrew Peace Wines and The Wine Tradition. These two companies provide all the wines on the wine list at Mount Coolum Golf Club, and got behind this event for the first time this year. Russell Gehling from The Wine Tradition represented the sponsors across the three-day event.
Thanks to all participants in the event this year – we look forward to welcoming back old friends and new next year, and to seeing this event grow into something even better!
